« …moreover, completely common that the doctors and nurses of this type of hospital structures are sometimes confused when facing a large number of patients to handle. We then observe they tend to commit mild errors concerning names or room numbers. An article published in the Washington Scientist in 1887 demonstrated that in these conditions, the residents themselves began to feel disturbed by the new architectures of such modern hospitals. This behavioral study showed that the same subjects started to roam in spaces, to make mistakes about their own rooms, to change their names, and in the structures recently standardized, to interchange their identities, others going as far as sleeping in the same bed, all convinced to be the same patient. […] In a particularly strange case concerning the Shandy’s Hospital of Providence, one night, all the sick residents walked in a single row through the hallways, looking for a right direction in the darkness. They began to get closer to the sentry box in the main hall, containing the only light still switched on in the hospital. « …d’ailleurs tout à fait commun que les médecins et infirmières de ce type de structures hospitalières soient quelquefois confus face au grand nombre de patients à traiter. On observe alors qu’ils commettent de bénignes erreurs de noms ou de chambres. Un article du Washington Scientist publié en 1887 démontra que dans ces conditions, les résidents eux-mêmes commençaient à se sentir troublés par les nouvelles architectures de ces hôpitaux modernes. Les comportements étudiés montrèrent que ces mêmes sujets se mirent à errer dans les espaces, en se trompant de chambre, en changeant leurs noms, et dans les structures récemment normalisées, à interchanger leurs identités, d’autres allant jusqu’à dormir à plusieurs dans le même lit, tous convaincus d’être le même patient. […] Dans un cas particulièrement étrange du Shandy’s Hospital de Providence, une nuit, l’ensemble des malades marchèrent en file indienne dans les couloirs, semblant chercher un guide dans l’obscurité.
